Various Types of Sermon:
1. Expository Sermon
It
is the message delivered from a particular message from the Bible. The word
expository comes from a Latin word- ‘ex-pono’ meaning ‘to bring out
or exit and ‘pono’- to place. Therefore, it means to bring out or
exhibit or display’. It is the preaching of the truth. It further centres
around one theme or a passage. Also called as Bible centre Preaching. It is
also called Instructive Preaching. It is the detail interpretation of the
passage.
According
to James Braga “Expository Sermon is ‘one in which
more or less extended portion of scripture is interpreted in relation of one
central idea’. The bulk of material further for the sermon is drawn is
directly from the passage and the outline consists of a series of progressive
ideas centre around one theme or idea.
Another
definition of Expository Sermon is ‘the communication of biblical
concept delivered from the historical, grammatical and literary perspective of
particular passage’ in simple words ‘communicating the truth
according to the author of the book’
The important elements of Expository Sermon
1. It deals with one basing passage references to
other passage to explain the main idea of particular passage.
2. In expository Sermon, the preacher remains
faithful to the text. The preacher maintains the balance and his intention is
to communicate the mind of the original author.
3. In Expository Sermon, the audiences are more
directed according to the original author of the passage.
4. It also has an application, without it remains
exposition and not a message.
5. It has a connection with other parts of the
message.

What is not Expository Sermon:
1. It is not an exposition or exegesis words by
words of the passage.
2. It is not making expository notes or devotional
remarks.
3. It is not just a survey of a scripture.
4. It is not preaching a no. of passages, it has to
be in-depth study of a passage.

The Advantage and Disadvantage
Advantage:
1. The preacher and congregation learnt the word of
God systematically.
2. It also enables to understand the whole Bible if
a preacher plans accordingly.
3. It meets the spiritual needs of the people and
produces Christian maturity.
4. It also helps the preacher to present without
fear.
Disadvantage:
1. The expository sermon can be dull and boring. If
it is not prepared and delivered rightly
2. The preacher may develop the tendency to just
read the word and explain
3. The preacher if not prepared and not able to
explain the meaning and original text.

Textual
Sermon:
It
can be powerful tools to deep the scripture with the support of other passage
and scripture. In textual sermon one or two verses can take for preparing the
sermon. Background of the text and expose the meaning of the text
1. The main theme and the outline of the sermon are
taken from the chosen text.
2. In textual sermon the text is only get way for
the preacher to enter in his or her subject
3. In textual sermon number of different verses can
be taken. Which contain the phrase, thought or subject and develop the
arguments
Advantages of textual sermon:
1. A short text may be impressed the audience and
capture their audience.
2. The short text can be easily memorized by the
audience
3. Textual sermon gives the preacher of their main
purpose it gives the preacher on the track
4. Textual sermon focus on an idea that is in the
mind of the preacher.
Disadvantages of textual sermon:
1. textual sermon can be become impository when
preacher puts in his ideas into the message
2. It may isolate the particular words, phrase,
text and the particular context.
3. Unlike expository sermon the preacher lacks a
freedom to select the long passage.
4. In textual sermon explaining scripture with the
full effectiveness sometimes is not possible in the textual sermon.
Several topics which can bring together:
1. Doctrinal: it deals with the doctrine.
2. Biographical sermon: deal with the bible
character
3. Evangelistic sermon: Deal with salvation,
forgiveness, etc.

Sermon:
1. Topical sermon is selected and supported and
other scripture in the bible.
2. The text is taken to furnish the topic
3. The main division of the sermon is driven from
the topic
4. Topical sermon can give greater understanding on
the Topic chosen by the speaker
